Old MacDonald Had A Farm is a favourite traditional children’s song from the British Isles and North America.
The earliest possible version of the song was written for an opera by Thomas D’Urfev in 1706. The other possibility is that D’Urfev used an already existing folk song for his Opera.
The lyrics and melody have changed over hundreds of years, until it was finally standardized in the twentieth century.

Old MacDonald teaches children animal names and their accompanying sounds with repeated rhythmical patterns. Children enjoy being able to choose which animal they want to sing about next.
Making up actions to go with the animal sounds is also another skill to add, once they are familiar with the song.
Teaching Points: word substitution; improvisation; pentatonic scale; s, l, d r m; storyboard.
