O Christmas Tree is the English version of the German Christmas Carol “O Tannenbaum” which means “O Fir Tree.” This carol is based on a traditional folk song, which was unrelated to Christmas.
The text does not mention Christmas, but rather the evergreen quality of the fir tree as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness. When the custom of Christmas trees developed in the 19th Century, so did this song become associated with Christmas.

Written in 3/4 waltz time, with it’s emphasis on the first beat, followed by two weaker beats, this song lends itself to beat activities. Melodically, it begins with s, d d d r mmm and this pattern repeats for the lyrics in the opening phrases.
Teaching Points: 3/4 waltz beat activities, in -tune singing, traditional Christmas Carol.
