Jingle Bells is one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. Ironically, it was not originally written as a Christmas song.
It was written by James Lord Pierpont and published in 1857, under the title “The One Horse Open Sleigh.”
In the 1860’s and 1870’s it became associated with Christmas music and the holiday season. It was first recorded in 1889.

Jingle Bells has wonderful rhythmical patterns and a very sprightly beat.
I have used the pattern ” ti – ti ta” in the instrumentation of the Chorus, using a “jingle bell” sound for this ostinato, or repeated pattern.
Melodically, the song uses a wide range of notes from the major scale.
The use of repetition of the same note in the chorus, matching the repetition of the rhythm, makes the Chorus easy for young children to sing.
Jingle Bells has such a happy, uplifting mood, it delights young and old alike!
Teaching Points: sprightly beat, rhythm, ti – ti ta (quavers x 2 and crotchet), traditional Christmas song.
