Humpty Dumpty is a well known English Nursery Rhyme, dated from the late 18th Century and the tune from 1870 in James William Elliott’s “National Nursery Rhymes and Nursery Songs.”
Like most traditional songs and rhymes, it’s origins are obscure and there are many theories about it’s original meaning.
It became popularized in the USA in a long running Broadway pantomime musical by Goerge L. Fox (1868 – 1869).
In Lewis Carroll’s 1871 book, “Through The Looking Glass” Humpty Dumpty was described, using literary allusion, as an egg.
