It is a cumulative song where a new verse is added about an animal and the sounds they make, each time the song is sung.

It is also known as “I Had A Little Rooster” and has many variations, like all traditional folk songs.

This folk song is written in 3/4 waltz time, with it’s accent on the first beat followed by two weak beats.

Children can learn to identify the accented beat and two weak beats by following a teacher or adult demonstrating different actions.

For example:-

accent = hands on head x 1

weak beat = hands on shoulders x 2

The cumulative nature of this song teaches children to memorize animals in the order they are sung, going backwards to the beginning animal, (the Rooster), each time a new verse is sung.
