Five Little Ducks is a traditional children’s song. The history and author is unknown.

It is a traditional counting song and introduces children to numbers and counting using subtraction.

Counting backwards or taking away is an important concept for children to grasp and this song is brilliant for teaching and reinforcing this understanding.

Five Little Ducks can also be used as a fingerplay song.

This gives children the added benefit of visual and kinesthetic learning in their understanding of counting and subtraction.

There is a lot of repetition used with the lyrics, as with all good children’s songs.

Repetition is how children learn language and this song ticks all the boxes!

The phrase “Mother Duck said ‘quack, quack, quack, quack’” is repeated in each verse and so there is repetition with ‘quack’ being sung 4 times.

This use of repetition gives children a sense of rhythm along with development of vocabulary.
