Silent Night is  the English version of a German Christmas Carol, “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht.”

It is a beautiful traditional Carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr, from Austria.

“Stille Nacht” was first performed on Christmas Eve, 1818, at St Nicholas parish church in a village in Austria.

Musically, it written in 3/4 waltz time and introduces children to singing softly (piano) and sensitively.

The melody is quite difficult to sing, as it has a wide range of notes.

Soft beat activities in 3/4 time are appropriate and adjusted according to the age bracket.

Teaching Points: 3/4 waltz beat activities, in – tune singing, traditional Christmas Carol.
