One Man Went To Mow is a great song for teaching numbers and counting, going forwards and backwards, or adding and subtracting.

The rhythm changes as we add numbers to successive verses. Children can indicate numbers using their fingers.

Also a felt board could aid young children’s understanding of numbers and counting upwards and backwards, by having pictorial representations of the “mowing man.”

The teacher or guardian can add one picture each time a new verse starts.

The teacher could point to each picture, starting at the last one, as it is sung counting backwards.

The melody of this song has a quite a narrow range, from d – s or a fifth interval. This makes it easy for young children to learn and sing.
