This folk song is written in 3/4 waltz time, with it’s accent on the first beat followed by two weak beats.
Children can learn to identify the accented beat and two weak beats by following a teacher or adult demonstrating different actions.
For example:-
accent = hands on head x 1
weak beat = hands on shoulders x 2
The cumulative nature of this song teaches children to memorize animals in the order they are sung, going backwards to the beginning animal, (the Rooster), each time a new verse is sung.
The use of a storyboard or felt board can aid young children in learning and memory skills.
It is good practice to give children choices about which animals they want to sing about and the sounds they want to use to represent the animals chosen.
Teaching Points: 3/4 time (waltz); memory development; word substitution; storyboard.
