Go Tell It On The Mountain is an African – American spiritual song, compiled by John Wesley Work Jr., dating back to at least 1865.
(Source: Wikipedia)
Work, the son of a church choir director in Nashville, was the first person to write down, collect and publish African – American spirituals.
Up until then, they were passed down verbally, from one generation to another. Go Tell It On The Mountain is considered a Christmas Carol, as it’s original lyrics celebrate the Nativity of Jesus.
Melodically, the song is mostly pentatonic, with a couple of notes that are exceptions. In the Chorus, the solfege m mrd l, s, d is repeated for the lyrics, “Go tell it on the mountain”.
In other words, the repeated melody is a straight run down the pentatonic scale.
This African – American song is a traditional Gospel song. It is a great song for teaching and reinforcing the 4/4 beat with it’s accent on the first and third beats.
Learning about body percussion, with different actions for the first and third beat, would be a good use of this gospel song. After keeping the beat is mastered, children could transfer to untuned percussion instruments with simple emphasis on the accented beats.
Teaching Points: beat, accent, traditional African – American Spiritual song, traditional Christmas song.
