Up On The Housetop is a Christmas song written by Benjamin Hanby in 1864. It has been recorded by many singers, most notably, Gene Autry in 1953.

Up On The House Top is the second-oldest secular Christmas song, outdone only by “Jingle Bells”, which was written in 1857. It is also considered the first Yuletide song to focus primarily on Santa Claus. In fact, Hanby was the first to offer up the idea that Santa and his sleigh land on the roof of homes.

Up On The Housetop is written in cut time, so although it is written in 4/4 time, it has the feel of 2/4 time. For this reason it is a great song for teaching and reinforcing the beat and accent.

Melodically, the verse uses the pentatonic scale d r m s l. The song opens with s sl s m   d m s_. The Chorus introduces fa as an extra note.

The range of notes in this song is quite limited, compared to other Christmas songs, being C D E F G A, so this makes it ideal for young singers.
